I was very fortunate to travel to Tuscany over Easter for my 50th birthday celebrations. My husband had a big party with a band and over 150 people for his 50th but I decided I would like to celebrate with my family.
We took a villa in a small village called Agnino, near Fivizanno in Northern Tuscany. There were 12 of us for the weekwith an age range of 10 to 74 .. Most people told me I was very brave to spend a week in a villa with my closest family and that I wouldn't enjoy the break.
I very carefully wrote an invitation to everyone with my expectations for the week. I assigned rooms to avoid any squabbling and even asked each couple to supply 6 bottles of red wine and 6 bottles of white wine. Each couple were to have a 'duty day' which consisted of laying the table and preparing a cold breakfast spread in the morning (they had a beautiful walk to the village to get the bread). They were then given a budget of 50 Euros to prepare the evening meal. I requested that we all met at 7.00 in the evening for drinks by the pool before supper but in the daytime everyone was free to do as they liked. Each couple hired a car as it was essential to explore the countryside. On my 'Glorious 50th' we hired a jazz band and the local village restaraunt cooked us a meal in the villa.
I had a wonderful week with my family and because of the organisation I actually had a holiday myself! We spent the whole week driving around to some beautiful places such as Cinque Terra, Pisa, Lucca, Florence soaking in the wonderful countryside and rolling Tuscan Hills.
I would recommend this type of break to any family as long as you prepare, organise and let people know your expectations before you arrive! It was certainly a wonderful way to spend my 50th surrounded by people I love.
